TeamBuy.ca and DealFind.com: Set to be Acquired after Filing for Bankruptcy Protection

I found a couple interesting articles that sheds some light into why TeamBuy.ca and DealFind.com recently filed for bankruptcy protection:

A motion has been filed by the legal representatives of Couch Commerce Inc., the group that owns TeamBuy Inc., Dealfind.com Corp., and MenuPalace.com Corp., to approve its sale to nCrowd Commerce Inc. on Monday, September 22, 2014… nCrowd is a company based out of US that has been buying up distressed deal sites since 2011 or so. Other distressed deal providers that have been acquired by nCrowd include Tippr, Saveology, Spreebird, to name just a few. The acquisition of Teambuy/Dealfind would enable nCrowd to enter the Canadian market in a leadership position.

Hopefully this is good news and it’ll mean they’ll be back soon. Teambuy is the largest Canadian based Daily Deal promotions company with over 3.5 million members. TeamBuy is the second largest overall behind Groupon in Canada.

It has come to my attention that TeamBuy.ca and DealFind.com recently declared bankruptcy.

Dear Valued Customer,

Please be advised that as of Friday, August 29, 2014, Couch Commerce Inc., the parent company of TeamBuy.ca/Dealfind.com, has entered into a legal & financial restructuring process. Pursuant to the rules and regulations governing the restructuring process, we cannot honor TeamBucks issued on or before August 29, 2014 and issue any refunds related to purchases on or before August 29, 2014.

Please note the purpose of the restructuring is to provide the Companies with a more stable environment to continue operations and develop a plan that will allow us to continue in business. We appreciate your prior support and looking forward to continued support through this important process.

I was not aware of this and only found out about it recently. I was not privy to any insider information or anything. I’m shocked and disappointed by the news. TeamBuy/DealFind was one of my favourite daily deals sites. I bought a lot of deals from them over the last couple years and never had any issues.

Allegedly, TeamBuy/DealFind is no longer offering refunds and has stopped paying their merchants. This has forced some merchants to stop accepting/honouring TeamBuy & DealFind vouchers. If you have any outstanding TeamBuy/DealFind vouchers that you haven’t used, your best bet is to contact the merchant and ask if they’re still honouring the voucher. If not, I suggest you contact your credit card company and request a charge back.

Because I can’t guarantee if any deals purchased from TeamBuy/DealFind will be honoured, I’m going to immediately stop posting TeamBuy/DealFind deals on my blog.

I will keep you posted if I hear any updates about this matter. In the meantime, I will continue to work hard and find all the best deals by posting them on my blog.

TeamBuy.ca and DealFind.com have merged! This is major news in the daily deals industry! TeamBuy and DealFind are the 2 biggest daily deals sites based in Canada. I thought something was up when I started noticing some overlapping deals on both sites last week. None the less, I was very surprised when I first heard the news.

According to TeamBuy’s blog, here’s a summary of some of the details:

  • TeamBuy’s user base and company has just grown A LOT (TeamBuy had approx 800K users, DealFind has over 3.5MM users)
  • The TeamBuy.ca brand and URL will remain for Canadian deals & users. Visitors to www.DealFind.ca will be redirected to TeamBuy.ca.
  • The DealFind.com brand and URL will remain for US deals & visitors/users.  As a result, expect to find DealFind.com assets added to LinkShare in the near future.
  • They are still hashing out the details while they complete the merger transition.

If I’m reading it correctly, it sounds more like TeamBuy acquired DealFind, then merged with DealFind. I thought it would have been the other-way around because DealFind had stronger sales and was the larger company. This means TeamBuy is now a major player in the industry and the 2nd biggest daily deals site behind Groupon in Canada. I don’t know the details of how long it will take the 2 sites to merge so I will continue to post and feature deals from both sites until they complete the transition. This means if you see the same deal featured on TeamBuy and DealFind, it’s probably a better idea to buy the deal on TeamBuy.ca. This should hopefully mean better deals for us moving forward since it’ll give TeamBuy the power to negotiate better deals with local businesses and with large brand name retailers. Congrats TeamBuy!
